Screening Rationale for Children with HHT for Brain VMs
Published on July 14, 2024
'The “watch and wait” approach to imaging means that children with brain vascular malformations will not be identified until a potentially life-threatening and deficit-producing intracerebral hemorrhage occurs. This expert group does not deem this to be an acceptable trade-off.'
In this paper, expert providers and advocates review current screening guidelines for children with HHT and provide evidence to counter the argument that screening may not be necessary until symptoms develop.
Table 1 from the attached publication provides some of the most prominent reasons to advocate for screening with evidence cited from recent publications by White et al (2023) and Azma et al (2022) and literature from the Brain Vascular Malformation Consortium (BVMC).

All BVMC publications can now be found on the Hub in the Publications folder.
The HHT International Guidelines can also be accessed from the Hub. Guidelines Publications are in the Files or you can find the Guidelines through the Resources tab.
